THE BEST MASCARA FOR SENSITIVE EYES

Mascara

I love mascara. It’s the one cosmetic I wear pretty much every day. Not only is it better at making you look awake than a cup of coffee (with two little ones, I need all the help I can get in this department!), but it’s also the perfect accessory to any outfit.

I started out as a Cover Girl Lash Blast girl. It’s a powerhouse mascara at a super reasonable price. But then I discovered Sephora and convinced myself it was totally acceptable to spend $20+ on one tube of mascara. I tried several different brands until I found my go-to’s: cult favorites Better Than Sex (Too Faced) and They’re Real (Benefit). I spent several years alternating between the two, and if you haven’t tried them yet I can assure you that both are ahh-mazing.

Then a few years back I started experiencing red, irritated eyes all the time. I tried every eye drop out there, but nothing helped. Not only was it painful, but the constant bloodshot eyes made me super self-conscious. I eventually found myself at an Ophthalmologist’s office being diagnosed with Meibomian Gland Dysfunction or MGD. It’s a fancy way of saying that I have dry eyes (poor quality tears that evaporate too quickly). I left with a prescription for Restasis, eyelid scrub, blinking exercises and a warning that eye makeup is not my friend. While I can reserve the eye liner for special occasions, there was no way I was giving up my beloved mascara!

I spent a lot of time and money trying out various natural and sensitive mascaras that promised length, thickness and curl. None delivered. Instead I ended up with clumpy, wet lashes and a lot of disappointment. On a whim I ordered Tarte Gifted Amazonian Clay Smart Mascara. I am a fan of the Tarte Amazonian Clay foundation, and knew they focused on hypoallergenic and vegan products. And boy was it a winner!

Here’s why I love it:

1) It stays put. Most mascaras made for sensitive eyes are wet, sticky and take at least 60 seconds to dry. Accidentally blink too soon and you’ll be fixing your makeup. There’s also no smudging throughout the day.

2) It comes off as easy as it goes on. My old favorites were hard to remove, even with eye makeup remover. I would wake up in the morning with raccoon eyes, even after a good cleaning the night before. This one is super easy to remove with plain coconut oil, my makeup remover of choice.

3) It delivers. My lashes look long, dark and feathery. And while they aren’t quite as dramatic as they were with my old favorites, it’s a really small price to pay for clear, happy eyes!

So if you’re in the market for a mascara that is both effective and gentle on sensitive eyes, I recommend you give this one a try. Since it is a bit pricey, keep an eye out for sales at Ulta, Sephora and Macy’s.

I’m currently hosting a giveaway of one tube of this mascara on Instagram. If you’re interested in participating, head over to my Instagram page!

What cosmetic can you not go without?

xoxo,

Kelly
