My 2019 New Years Resolutions

I don’t know about you, but I am really excited for 2019! There is something about a new year that offers a clean slate and a fresh start, making it seem like anything is possible. I had a big year filled with change in 2018. My family and I moved from Columbus, OH to Cleveland, OH to be closer to my parents. I went from working full-time for the past ten years in corporate America to being a stay-at-home mom to my 2- and 4-year olds. I took a huge risk by starting a blog and putting myself out there more than I ever have before. While all of the change was positive, it really knocked me off my routines. 2019 will be all about focusing on establishing healthy habits when it comes to my health, my home and my family. Below are my top resolutions. I have quite a few of them, but I’m up for the challenge!

DRINK AT LEAST 64 OZ OF WATER EACH DAY
Have you ever had a day, week, or heck even a month, when you just aren’t really drinking water? You get through a day and realize the only water you drank was in the form of coffee? When I’m not drinking enough water, which I haven’t been for the past few months, my anxiety goes through the roof. Water is so readily accessible, and yet so many of us don’t get enough. I got myself an adorable new rose gold Corksicle tumbler and stainless steel straws as incentive to drink more water. Because let’s be honest, who doesn’t drink more water when it means they can carry around a cute tumbler with them?

KEEP A PLANNER
The best way to stay organized? A good old fashioned planner. I use my phone to keep me on task, but honestly it’s often more of a distraction than anything else. This year I’m committing to maintaining a planner and I’m going with The Happy Planner. I’m getting it ready now and am so excited about the customization options available! I will be sharing a review of the planner on the blog in the coming weeks.

PRACTICE DAILY GRATITUDE
There are so many benefits to practicing regular gratitude, and this article does a good job of summarizing it. In short it improves sleep, self-esteem, physical health, mental health and empathy — just to name a few. Sign me up! I’ll be using The Five-Minute Journal to make it easier to stick with this resolution.

READ ONE BOOK A MONTH
I love to read, but since having kids this hobby has fallen to the wayside. I’ve been trying to get back into the habit, and nothing has motivated me more than this article. It’s no secret I struggle with anxiety, and when I learned that just six minutes of reading can help reduce stress levels by up to 60% it seemed like a no brainer. Bring on the books!

WORK OUT AT LEAST THREE TIMES A WEEK
I’ve had trouble maintaining any sort of workout routine since staring to stay home with my kids. I always intend to work out in the morning, but hit the snooze instead. Then by naptime I’ve found five other chores that need done. And by time they go to bed I’m just too tired. Honestly, the excuses are endless. But no more! I’m starting to suffer, both physically and mentally, from my lack of exercise and it’s not doing anyone any good. So, I’ll be using my Beachbody On-Demand subscription to work out a minimum of three times every week. For the first time every I’m going to snap some before pictures, and progress pictures, for motivation (and I’m a little nervous for the before pictures).

MEDITATE FOR 10 MINUTES EVERY DAY
I started meditating a little over a year ago. I did it to help with my anxiety (noticing a theme here?!), and found it to be super effective. I have a mind that is constantly racing with thoughts, what if’s and worries. It’s hard to find ways to turn it off, but meditation is one way that works. That’s not to say that sometimes my mind doesn’t fight the quiet and the stillness, but if you keep at it for the full 10 minutes there’s always relief at the end. I personally use a meditation app because it helps keep me on track and makes sticking with it easier. I’ve not be as consistent as I’d like, so I’m aiming to do 10 minutes every day using the Calm app.

LIMIT MY SCREEN TIME
Seems a bit ironic for a blogger, right? But seriously, anyone else feel more anxious after spending a lot of time on their phone or tablet? It’s so important to take breaks from your screens, but it’s equally difficult to do in today’s society (and even more so if you’re a blogger). I need to do a better job of balancing time working on my blog and growing my social media account with being fully present during my time with my family. To do this I’m implementing screen free times from 7:30-9:30 a.m. and 5-7 p.m.

SWITH TO HEALTHIER CLEANING, SKINCARE AND MAKEUP PRODUCTS
This is something I’ve been doing on and off for the last few years, but this year I would like to commit to swapping out as many products as possible to make a safer home for my family, and treat my skin as kindly as possible. I am testing out two new brands to help make efforts easier.

  • Grove Collaborative is a customizable auto-shipment service that delivers all-natural home, beauty, and personal care products directly to your door. You can get products month, or delay shipments until you need refills. They have a wide selection of products, and I’ll be doing a separate post to share the choices in my first order soon. You can use this link to get a free 5-piece set with your first order!
  • Beautycounter is skincare and makeup company whose mission is to get safer products into the hands of everyone. I just received my first shipment of products and will be sharing reviews once I’ve had enough time to really know how I feel about them.
